The Committee on Area and Ethnic Studies And Research (CAESAR) is a collection of affiliated programs that offer interdisciplinary majors and minors.

Classical Studies is concerned with the cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome. The program offers both a major and a minor through the Departments of History, Literature, Visual Arts, Theater and Dance, and Philosophy.

CLASSICAL STUDIES

European Studies is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the politics, culture, economy, society and history of Europe, and on Europe’s place in the world. The program draws on various departments to offer a minor.

EUROPEAN STUDIES

German Studies is ideal for broad academic interests in the German-speaking world. The program offers both a major and a minor through courses from the Departments of History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, and more.

GERMAN STUDIES

Italian Studies is an interdisciplinary program in the language, literature, history, music, theatre and art of Italy. The program coordinates with the Departments of History, Literature, Music, Theatre and Dance, and Visual Arts to offer both a major and a minor.

ITALIAN STUDIES

Middle East Studies aims at a comparative study of the Middle East (including North Africa). The minor emphasizes the period since the emergence of Islam, and may include the ancient, medieval, or modern Middle East, or a Middle Eastern language depending on individual interests.

MIDDLE EAST STUDIES

Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) is an interdisciplinary program with both a major and a minor that provides a broad range of courses in the history, language, literature, and social and political life of Russia (before, during, and after the Soviet period).
